Day by Day

A New Year January 2019

This down time of Christmas has been blissful and soul restoring. I feel a little like a dormouse tentatively poking my nose out of my cosy winter hideaway into the world beyond. It’s often hard gearing up to a new term, but this time of year I’m most reluctant to come out of hibernation.

We’ve had a couple of lovely family get togethers with an abundance of aunts, uncles and cousins. For one of these the girls and a friend put together (not made from scratch!) a gingerbread house. We do this most years, and the task has been handed down from the boys to the girls. We (I) couldn’t bear to break it up straight away so left it a few days by which time most of the sweeets had disappeared!

We’ve had a run of cold weather which has meant bracing walks and the fun of smashing large sheets of ice. We found one with autumn leaves frozen inside; the photo doesn’t do its simple beauty justice.

It’s also increased my longing  to sit in front of the fire with a hot cup of tea and a good book.

However, it’s a New Year and a good time for a little reflection. I always gather together the various Bible verses, thoughts or anything I feel God has been prompting me about, and scribble them all down in my journal. It’s interesting to look back over previous years and see God’s faithfulness, in times of both blessing and challenge. I love to see how He weaves a pattern throughout our lives.

And then there are the resolutions. We can make these any time of year, but I find it’s good to have a bit of a rethink about how I want to use my time and where I want to invest my limited energy and resources.  The boys and I do a reboot of our screen use. It’s hard changing old habits or embedding new ones, and it’s helpful to have someone to be accountable to. And…it’s just about the time I said I’d switch off each evening, so I must stop now! Finally, we will fail and need to try again or come up with a different plan, and my hope is this models, in some small way, that God’s grace and forgiveness is limitless and that we’re all in need of it. And when we succeed it’s important to remember to celebrate!
