North America September/ October 2018

Our first stop on our whistle-stop-picture-book-tour-of-the-world was North America. We mainly focused on USA, but Sparkly Eyes enjoyed finding out about the huskies (her favourite dog) in Canada.

As well as these books, I used postcard templates from Activity village…                     activityvillage.co.uk and we watched a couple of BBC documentaries with Ray Mears (bush craft guru) in the States.

At the end of the six weeks, the girls coloured in and annotated maps of the continent. Dancing Toes really enjoyed this, working from two atlases to find various cities, mountain ranges, rivers etc.

We had visited the American Mueum in Bath at the beginning of the summer, while Lanky Dude looked around the uni, so we had memories from that to dip into. I had also done an extended project on America (one of our most fun) with the three older children, and we’d cooked “cowboy food” in our Dutch oven over the fire, visited the SS Great Britain and The Matthew and done lots more reading and discovering. So Dancing Toes had some memories from this too, on which to build her new knowledge.

  1. What a great idea! I may do similar when we introduce Geography more formally to our morning basket loop next year. Just need to decide where to start on our world tour!?
